St Peter's Church Nottingham Tower Appeal

1. A living heritage

St Peter's Church and its gardenFor over three quarters of a millennium the people of Nottingham have come to St Peter's Church, a place of worship and an historical landmark, which physically and spiritually lies at the heart of our city. The Church, which is a Grade 1 listed building, was constructed in 1180 with the magnificent decorated tower and crocketed spire completed in 1340.

St Peter's history is long and fascinating, reflected in the contrast of its architectural styles. The Early English south arcade, the great West End with its imposing arched door and niches, the Perpendicular style north aisle and the unique embattled tower and tall spire: all reflect the skill, dedication and love of past generations.

From age to age, Reformer and Puritan, Cavalier and Roundhead, seventeenth eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, all have left their mark on the ancient fabric; and these marks are to be read clearly and distinctly by all who visit this magnificent medieval building.

St Peter's today

The interior of St Peter's Church, NottinghamSt Peter's Church stands at the heart of the City of Nottingham, witness to the love of God for all of His people. Always conscious of society's changing needs, we continue to relate in key ways to the life of the city and communities of Nottingham, as well as fulfilling the traditional rôle of a vibrant parish church.

Thousands of people come into contact daily with St Peter's and, being situated between two major shopping centres and amidst various retail outlets and leisure activities, it continues to be a focal point at the centre of a thriving city.

To provide for the various needs of the people of Nottingham, St Peter's is open seven days a week offering spiritual guidance, support, comfort and strength. People visit the Church for many reasons, to attend services or to seek help, others to study its history and architecture, and the homeless find shelter in its environs. It is an oasis of peace and quiet providing a rare green space amidst the hustle and bustle of Nottingham's busy streets.

Over the past year people from over thirty countries have visited St Peter's, and many have commented on the peace and openness they found.
