We
have always met our ongoing running costs and essential repairs from our
own finances, but the scale of expenditure we are now facing is beyond the
scope of our funds. As a result of the sale of some parish land in the early 1960s a trust
fund was established, and this fund is donating £100,000 to the Tower
Appeal, almost 20% of the target.
Constant weathering and pollution, together with the daily use of a
medieval building, creates exceptional needs connected with its fabric,
and it is only after we have used our own internal resources that we turn
to you to seek help with the funding for the tower initiative. The last appeal of this nature was in 1929 and there is no intention to
have another in the foreseeable future.
St Peter’s PCC (Parochial Church Council) is committed to raise the money required to repair and
preserve the ancient fabric of the church. If it is to achieve this goal
it is essential that everyone who supports St Peter’s, its work and its
heritage, helps as generously as they are able. A programme of funding has
been researched and established, and we are seeking support from local
industry and commerce, grant-making charitable trusts, organisations and
individuals sympathetic to our project, and from the community itself.
We are proud of the fact that this is not an emergency appeal to
rectify the oversights of previous generations. However some of the work,
especially on the tower and spire, needs to be done without delay; and if
not addressed soon will become critical in the future. Action must be
taken now.
