St Peter's Church Nottingham Tower Appeal

2. What needs to be done?

The tower of St Peter's Church, NottinghamThere is a legal requirement for inspections to be carried out on church buildings every five years (the Quinquennial inspections). At the last review St Peter’s architect Derek Latham, together with structural engineers Price and Myers, were commissioned to report on the condition of the fabric of St Peter’s; and their reports highlighted those areas that were in urgent need of repair and renovation. They strongly recommended that the work be carried out as soon as possible.

Work on the tower and spire can only be undertaken from a complete scaffold which is expensive to erect, and it would be prudent and financially responsible to maximise its effectiveness by undertaking further high level remedial repairs. With scaffolding in place there is also an opportunity to clean the stonework.

Phase 1: The Tower, Spire and other stonework

Extensive masonry repairs including replacing and turning selected stones, consolidating crumbling masonry, restoration of parapet and finials, repointing of open joints and cracks. High level repairs to the north aisle, north transept, chancel and south aisle.
Cost £370,000.

Phase 2: Cleaning

An appraisal by a specialist conservation company has been undertaken and, following their recommendations, the stonework will be selectively cleaned of the sulphurous grime and pollution of the centuries to reveal its contrasting colours and texture.
Cost £120,000.

Phase 3: Floodlighting

The installation of floodlighting will increase security and will provide a visual focal point in Nottingham’s evening townscape, highlighting St Peter’s as a place that stands out as being devoted to serving the spiritual needs of the community it serves.
Cost £24,000.

Total cost

The total anticipated cost of the work including administration is £600,000. This figure is based on the tender we have accepted but it will change as the project progresses, going up and down. There are sums identified that will produce savings but there may also be unrecognised increases.
