Seventy years on...

St Peter's Choir in concert, back in 1935

Looking through some papers the other day, I came across this programme of a concert given by St Peter’s Choir in the Albert Hall in 1935. The leaflet was given to me by Mrs Myra Chilvers and I have asked her if I may present it for inclusion in the magazine this year, seventy years since the concert took place. It might well be of interest to our people today.

One thing which impresses me is that all the items performed by the choir, apart from the “Hail gladdening light” by Martin, are in our repertoire today. Mr Vincent Trivett, whom many of us remember very well, always demanded the highest standards and the anthems and settings he chose reflected this.

Readers may also note that the tradition of having a piano concerto movement with organ, established by Mr Bernard Johnson, the first Organist of the restored Albert Hall with its fine Binns organ, was being carried on by Mr Gordon Thorp, also known to many of us.

It is good to reflect that our magnificent choral tradition maintained with such dedication today by Philip Collin was in such good heart in 1935.
